For the use of forklifts, there are several health and safety rules governing their use. Lift trucks are big industrial equipment which could be dangerous and have to be handled with safety in mind. The rules and regulations state that the driver should conduct daily checks on the lift truck and more thorough checks on a weekly basis and on a monthly basis. The following inspections must be done on the forklift:
Lift Truck Brakes - brakes on lift trucks are important features that must be double and triple checked. A brake inspection is performed with different pressures and pedal heights to determine the sensitivity of the brakes. The brake lights should be checked at the same time.
The Tires - forklift tires are also important for the safe performance of the lift truck and to the braking system. All the tires should be inspected properly to ensure they are inflated to the right pressure and that there are no punctures in the tires.
Controller - the lift truck controller system is checked by operating the forks and the release to determine that the system is in good working order. Any indication of problems must immediately reported and tended to. The forklift must not be used until the controller system has been fixed.
Steering Wheel - To make sure that the turning of the wheel is right, the operator must inspect the forklift steering wheel. Forklift safety depends upon the steering wheel responding well and functioning accurately. There are various types of checks which could be done to determine the performance of the steering wheel.
Engine Oil - the Removing the oil dip stick from the engine with help determine if the engine requires oil. The dipstick will show both the level of the oil and the colour of the oil. The oil should be refilled if the level is too low. If the colour is off, there could be contamination happening.
Fire Extinguisher - all lift trucks are required to be outfitted with a fire extinguisher. The extinguisher needs to be checked to ensure it would work correctly in the event of a fire. Different types of fire extinguisher should be inspected in specific ways. For instance, a dry chemical extinguisher should be shaken.
