A kind of machine which is specially utilized to unload and load heavy, large freight containers is referred to as a container forklift. They are used to shuttle freight on and off trains, ships and truck beds. Container forklifts are the largest and most durable kinds of forklifts manufactured. They need to be very maneuverable on uneven terrain and have enough power and torque to safely raise large containers. Usually, they have heavy-duty diesel engines and large pneumatic tires.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift utilizes forks to raise the containers. Forks need to be positioned to make sure the load is secure during transport. Various kinds of container forklifts are only meant to lift the containers a few meters off the ground. Other container handlers use a different method for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler utilizes an apparatus attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Lifting and transporting containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Regular forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the most weight they could handle. The forklift's capabilities must never be exceeded and must be posted prominently in the cockpit.
