Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located close to the charging area. The path to the station should not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow items like matches or lighters to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
