A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine that is quite similar to a forklift. It enables the operator to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Normally, order pickers are operated by electricity. These equipment are mainly used in a warehouse setting. Most often they are utilized for transporting pallets and completing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines can be raised to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. For example, if the required materials, are situated on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be used to complete these particular tasks at some companies instead.
